JOB TITLE:                                 LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR


REPORTS TO:                             CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER (CMO)

Performs the essential duties, responsibilities and the primary functions of a Licensed Professional Counselor in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of assigned patients. Responsible for meeting the established standards of Licensed Professional Counselor Practice as set forth by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors and Chapter 50 of the Human Services Code. Responsible for promoting teamwork with physicians and personnel of other departments and centers. Responsible for solving practical problems, dealing with a variety of issues and interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form. Demonstrates professional knowledge and judgement of practice as a Counselor.


  • Ability to assess, project, and plan for patient needs.
  • Maintains knowledge of current local, state and national resources.
  • Conducts child abuse assessments.
  • Coordinates referrals, follow-up and counseling for high risk patients.
  • Maintains current knowledge of medications.
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions exercising independent judgment.
  • Provides patients and their families with education based on the age, condition, development, and psychosocial aspects of the patient.
  • Provides accurate, timely and complete documentation with respect to plan of care, assessment and other patient care documentation.
  • Communicates effectively (hear, listen, speak) with patients, and families.
  • Communicates effectively (hear, listen, speak) with physicians and health team members. 
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions, exercising independent judgement.
  • Provides accurate, timely and complete documentation.
  • Provides a safe environment for patients, families, and co-workers.
  • Respects patients’ rights and confidential information.
  • Demonstrates age specific competence in caring for patients from various age groups.
  • Adheres to Infection Control policies and procedures.
  • Incorporates continuous performance improvement recommendations into clinical practice.
  • Supports and practices in accordance with MCHS policies, procedures and protocol.
  • Appropriate use of sick time.
  • Follows the time and attendance policy.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule in order to meet the needs of the Clinic.
  • Adheres to Department Dress Code.
  • Assumes responsibility for his/her professional development.
  • Contributes to and participates in cost containment activities.
  • Completes AED, other MCHS and clinic education competencies and other required training and/or service.
  • Attends meetings as directed Supervisor
  • Participates in community activities that promote positive relations.
  • Must be willing to treat children
  • All other duties as assigned by Supervisor



No immediate supervision of other employees required.



To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform essential job duties.

  • Must pass the employee drug screen with a negative test result.
  • Education and /or experience:
    • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work or a related field.
  • Licensure:
    • Current State of Texas License as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or related licensure.
  • Language skills:
    • Ability to read, analyze and interpret the patient’s medical record and MCHS / Clinic and departmental policies and procedures.
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions in English from medical staff, managers, patients, families and the general public.
    • Bilingual Preferred
  • Mathematical Skills:
    • Ability to calculate statistical data.



Contacts are with patients, families, co-workers, visitors, physicians, supervisors, administrative staff and other clinic department personnel.


BBP Class III: This position includes the potential for routine duties that are prone to bloodborne pathogen exposure. These employees will receive personal protective equipment training, bloodborne pathogen standard training, and learn safety precautions. Employees in this class will be offered vaccinations provided by Midland Community Healthcare Services

Physical Demand: Ability to interact with patients and operate office equipment for patient services. Employees will need the ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs, or more, independently as necessary. Vision abilities are required to read and verify patient information, to read information on medical records, and the read information on computer systems. Ability to pull, push, lift, and manipulate equipment and files. The ability to move freely about the front office and medical record areas in order to perform the job duties is required.
